Trendy or Timeless? This question is bound to cross your mind in the wedding planning process. And after attending some and shooting many weddings I’m here to give some insight.
The most ironic part of this entire post is that my first and foremost belief is to urge you to do what you desire for your day. Not what some random photographer online told you, hehe, or what any family member keeps hinting at. Come back to the simplicity of you and your finacé and how to best celebrate your love that day.
This takes me right into my next thought. Who are you? Separately. And who are you as a couple? As a person who loves someone giving me a definitive answer, it pains me to say there isn’t one in this conversation. It’s about who you are and what feels like a better fit for you. Maybe it’s a little bit of both or maybe it’s neither. I’m talking about themed weddings. Like a Casino themed wedding. You might think I’m kidding, but happily I’m not. Happily because if you want to have a casino-themed wedding well heck have a casino-themed wedding!
But anyway, back to the point, or maybe that is my point. Does a casino-themed wedding capture your story? Then go for it. Or maybe your love stands out because every time you’re together it feels like a party. If that’s the case maybe a trendy disco ball with a vibrant floral arrangement is the direction for you. Maybe after months of being long-distance, you have a box full of letters to and from each other. How stunning to capture that story timelessly surrounded by a cream-colored venue inspired by the stationary that still holds the words you once wrote to one another.
I find it helpful to think surface levely about it too. What are your own personal styles? How do you express yourself through decor, music, and hobbies? Are you always evolving in those areas (trendy) or are you consistent with your interests (timeless)?
Either direction you choose, trendy or timeless, you will look back on your photos and notice these two things. Your photos are a time capsule that captured the era of not only the year you got married but that era of your love story. And secondly, what you thought would remain timeless has somehow found its way to be dated.
With all that being said. Find a photographer that makes you forget it all. As the years pass and you reminisce on the day by viewing your gallery of photos let your first thought be a feeling. The feeling of deep connection with your partner, nostalgia of the day and time of life, the feeling of falling in love with your person all over again, the feeling of freedom. Your photos were meant to tell a story, so let them be your personal documentary on your love story. And if you find a photographer who does that for you your photos will always be timeless no matter the trends.

Judiann
